A layered neckline looks effortless, but the best stacks follow a few simple rules. Once you understand length and spacing, you can build a look from pieces you already own, or start with a set designed to be worn together.
Start with length
Necklace length decides where each layer sits, and it matters more than anything else in a stack. As a general guide:
- 35–40 cm: sits close to the base of the neck, like a choker. A good top layer.
- 41–45 cm: sits at or just below the collarbone. The most versatile length and the easiest starting point.
- 46–55 cm: falls just above the neckline of most tops. Ideal for a pendant that you want to be seen.
- 60 cm and longer: sits over the chest, perfect over knits, shirts and simple dresses.
Lengths are measured end to end, so where a necklace sits will vary slightly with the person and the outfit. An extender chain gives you room to adjust.
Leave space between layers
Aim for a gap of around 5 cm between each necklace. Too close and the chains crowd each other and tangle; too far apart and they read as separate pieces rather than one look. If two chains are similar in length, use an extender to move one of them down.
Choose one focal point
Every good stack has a hero. Pick one piece that draws the eye, such as a pendant, a pearl or a charm, and keep the other layers finer and quieter. Two statement pieces at once tend to compete rather than complement.
Mix textures, not too many metals
Interest comes from contrast: a smooth snake chain next to a beaded strand, or a fine chain under a pearl. Metals are a matter of taste. Sticking to one tone looks polished and calm, while mixing gold and silver works best when it looks deliberate, for example two gold layers with one silver.
Match the neckline
- Crew neck or tee: keep layers above the neckline, or go long over the top.
- V-neck: follow the V with a pendant that sits at its point.
- Open collar shirt: two or three fine layers inside the collar look relaxed and considered.
- Knitwear: one long necklace over the top is all you need.
Easy combinations to start with
The everyday two-layer
Pair the solitaire style from the Aurelia Duo Necklace, which sits neatly at the collarbone at 42 cm, with the Stella Oval Pendant Necklace at 48 cm. The fine top layer adds sparkle, and the star pendant becomes the focal point.
The long layer over knitwear
At 68 cm, the Starlight Pearl Necklace falls over a jumper or simple dress. Add a short, fine chain at the collarbone to frame the face.
The pearl and heart pairing
The Moonlit Heart Necklace features a heart-shaped baroque pearl pendant. Wear it as the lower layer under a fine chain for a soft, romantic look.
Or skip the styling: ready-made layers
If you'd rather not work out lengths yourself, these pieces are designed to be worn together.
Aurora Equestrian Pearl Layered Necklace has four layers at 37.5, 41, 45 and 53.5 cm, plus an extender. The spacing is already done for you, finished with glass pearls and equestrian-inspired charms.
Polaris Heart Layered Necklace combines three complementary chains with a North Star charm and a sculptural heart, in gold or silver.
Secret Key 3-in-1 Layered Pearl Necklace includes three fully detachable necklaces, so you can wear one, two or all three.
Santorini Convertible Layer Set pairs a turquoise-toned pendant with a beaded necklace. Buy either piece on its own or both as a set.
How to stop layered necklaces tangling
- Keep a clear length difference between layers, around 5 cm.
- Mix chain weights: a slightly heavier chain is less likely to twist around a fine one.
- Put on the longest necklace first and the shortest last.
- Store each necklace separately, fastened, so the chains don't knot between wears. Our Travel Jewellery Roll keeps them apart when you're away from home.
